Health, Safety and the Environment

McAsphalt Industries Limited is committed to protecting the earth’s vital resources and promoting sustainable economic development. Our guiding principles incorporate health, safety and environmental performance into our business operating strategy to ensure we are accountable to our employees, customers, key stakeholders, shareholders and the communities within which we operate. As part of our commitment to the health and safety of our employees and to the environment, McAsphalt will maintain an Health, Safety & Environmental  management system that conforms to both ISO 14001 and 45001 standards; and applicable codes, guidelines and standards recommended by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), relevant flag states, classification societies and maritime industry organizations.

Through actionable commitment, management will provide the direction and ongoing support for our health, safety and environmental performance, including safe practices in ship operations through the development and implementation of a written safety management system that applies to all levels of the organization, including all shore-based locations, all vessels and all personnel who are directly involved or employed at these locations and/or on all vessels. In order to meet our objectives in safety and environmental protection, we require total commitment from all personnel who are directly involved in company operations. This includes shore-based managers and staff, vessel masters, officers and crew where applicable.

By defining levels of authority and lines of communication throughout all levels of the organization and between and among shore and shipboard personnel, both management and employees are responsible and accountable for the effectiveness of our health, safety and environmental management system and are required to work in a safe and sustainable manner. This includes but is not limited to regularly evaluating hazards and reporting unsafe behaviour, working conditions and unplanned events that result in an injury, loss or impact to the environment.

We will improve the efficient use of natural resources, including energy, and use innovative design and engineering to reduce the environmental impact of our processes and products.

We will seek ways to eliminate pollution generated at the source and to prevent the release of substances that can cause harm to air, water, land and, in particular, the marine environment, including using oil-pollution-prevention equipment and procedures. To ensure safety at sea, we will evaluate, control and/or remove all foreseeable hazards that may result in accidents, personal injury/illness, fires, security losses or other property damage.

Continual Improvement

We will ensure that an internal audit program is implemented and monitored at all times for all facilities, departments and marine-based operations, with the goal of continual improvement in health, safety and environmental-management skills, including both shipboard and shore-based personnel. We will focus on preparation for emergencies related both to safety and environmental protection, and ensure that adequate reports and non-conformities, including all health, safety and environmental matters within the provisions of the ISM code, are presented to the senior management team, at minimum, on an annual basis.

McAsphalt is committed to all applicable health, safety and environmental laws and regulations, standards and requirements, particularly the International Marine Safety Code (ISM), to which we subscribe. Contracted personnel must meet or exceed all health, safety and environmental laws, regulations and company requirements applicable to their scope of work, including instructions and procedures to ensure safe operation of ships and protection of the environment in compliance with relevant international and flag state legislation.
