StellarFlex FR® at Toronto Pearson Airport
AIRPORT GRADE FUEL-RESISTANT HIGH SHEAR ASPHALT MIX
In a first-in-Canada field trial, the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) laid down fuel-resistant, high-stability asphalt mix on the Pearson Airport’s Taxiway Bravo in October 2020 and Taxiway Alpha in June 2021 using our specialty StellarFlex FR® binder.
Our initial development work dates back to the winter of 2017 when we first started formulating our fuel-resistant (FR) binder using Associated Asphalts’ 15+ years of international experience. Our FR binder is uniquely formulated to withstand the extreme stresses that airport pavements must endure: exposure to jet fuel and the enormous weight of slow-moving aircraft. The binder is produced using engineered polymers and additives that increase the mix’s resistance to heavy loads and fuel-induced failure modes. The lubricity of the binder is also balanced using special additives to achieve a lower in-place density despite the PG 82-28 grade. This allows us to create a mix that is less permeable and thus more resistant to fuel and the ingress of de-icing solutions. These sections at the Pearson Airport will be monitored and will undergo a 2-year performance review.
